The Five Lab Tests That Actually Matter for Kratom

Almost every kratom listing online says β€œlab tested.” The phrase is unregulated, so on its own it tells you nothing. What matters is which tests were run, who ran them, and whether the report matches the batch in your hand.

Here are the five panels that make up a genuine kratom analysis. This is educational information about product quality and laboratory practice β€” nothing here describes what kratom does in the body, and nothing here is medical advice.

1. Alkaloid Profile

This measures the naturally occurring alkaloids in the leaf, primarily mitragynine, and reports them as a percentage of the material. A second figure, 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), occurs naturally in the plant in trace amounts. An unusually high 7-OH number is the clearest signal that a product has been concentrated or altered rather than simply milled from leaf. It is the single most useful number on the page for telling plain leaf apart from something engineered.

2. Heavy Metals

Kratom is an agricultural product, and plants draw up what is in their soil and water. A proper panel screens for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury. This is one of the most important tests on the list precisely because contamination is invisible β€” you cannot see, smell or taste it, so testing is the only way anyone knows. Results are typically reported in parts per million against a defined limit.

3. Microbial Screening

Leaf is harvested, dried and ground, and every one of those steps is a chance for microbial contamination. A microbial panel looks for Salmonella, E. coli, yeast and mold, and a total aerobic plate count. This is not a theoretical concern β€” the FDA has issued recalls of kratom products over Salmonella contamination, which is exactly why batch-level microbial testing exists.

4. Adulterants and Synthetic Alkaloids

The honest problem in this industry is not the leaf, it is what some sellers add to it. A good lab screens for synthetic or semi-synthetic alkaloids and for undeclared additives. If a vendor cannot produce a report addressing this, you are trusting a promise instead of a measurement.

5. Moisture and Water Activity

The least discussed and genuinely useful test. Moisture content and water activity determine whether mold can grow during storage. A product can leave a facility clean and still spoil in a warehouse if this was never checked.

The Test Is Only As Good As the Lab

A report from an unaccredited lab is a piece of paper. The standard to look for is ISO/IEC 17025 β€” an international accreditation covering testing and calibration laboratories, which means an outside body has audited the lab's methods and competence. Independent third-party labs such as Florida-based ACS Laboratory publish useful public education on what these panels cover and how botanical testing works β€” worth reading before you buy from anyone, including us.
